About Me

My name is Kristen Thompson, and I am a faculty member at Davidson College in the Department of Physics.  I received a B.S. in Physics and Astronomy from Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio in 2006 and a M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 2009 and 2012, respectively.  I joined the physics department at Davidson in Fall 2013.  While at Davidson, I have taught physics, astronomy, and writing courses and have worked with students on various radio astronomy research projects.  My research program focuses on determining the strengths of magnetic fields throughout the Milky Way Galaxy using some of the largest telescopes in the world.  To learn more about my research interests and my work with students, please visit the ‘Research’ page on this site.

In my time away from the office, here are some things that I enjoy:

  • Stargazing with friends, family, students, and the community.   You can view more about my outreach efforts on the ‘Outreach’ page.
  • Spending time outdoors with my husband Grant.
  • Spoiling my cat Gizmo.
  • NASCAR.
  • Traveling.
